Road construction

Physical progress
Road construction works are approaching completion in most of the corridors, most RBGs/SBGs are mostly engaged in rock breaking, gabion band wall construction and road finishing works. In addition, hand drill machines are also being used to break hard rock in the remaining critical sections of the works.

Construction completion and road opening
Of the total 12 RAPII road corridors, construction works on 2 road corridors were completed in the first half of 2011 and major works on 5 road corridors are scheduled for substantial completion before June 2012. Construction works on the remaining 5 road corridors will be completed before March 2013. Construction progress status and scheduled dates of corridor completion to the fair weather district standards is depicted in the Table below.

Mobilisation of RBGs and SBGs
As the majority of earth works are almost completed total number of RBGs engaged at the peak of 2012-construction season has stated to decline. However, RBGs and SBGs engaged in rock breaking, cross drainage and construction of gabion wall structures will continue working till the work completion indicated above. Towards the end of the trimester reporting period, about 50% of the total 742 RBGs formed and about two-third of 180 SBGs formed at the beginning of the programme are engaged in road construction activities.

MS2, part of Mid Hill Highway
MS2 road section falls within the mid hill highway and DoR would like to take over the section from RAP for further improvement to the mid hill highway standards. Owing to the information, RAP will be limiting its activities to road opening only leaving slope protection and bioengineering works to the Department of Road project.
